Pleven

The town of Pleven (122 149 inhabitants, about 150 metres above sea level) is situated in the central part of the Danubian Plain, past the Vit River. It is located at the distance of 174 km to the north-east of Sofia. It is a town-pantheon and also a regional administrative centre.

The industrial city of Pleven is an important regional centre with high concentration of valuable urban sights. Many of these are monuments or museums honouring the siege of Pleven - probably the most decisive episode of the War of Liberation from Ottoman rule: the Pleven Panorama, the Mausoleum-Ossuary, the Museum of Liberation.

Also known as Storgozia in Roman times, Pleven actually has Thracian origins. It underwent a greatest expansion during the 19th century and later it became, what today is known, the largest city in the Danubian valley of the River Vit.

Of special interest are the exhibits of the History Museum - 6000-year old Neolithic dwelling from the nearby village of Telish and artifacts from Roman and mediaeval sites in the region, and those of the Etnographic Museum. Tourists can also visit the Skobelev park (built up in the south-west part of the town, on a low hill), the renowned Pleven Epic 1877 Panorama, the Monument to Victory, the two theatres – Theatre of Drama and the Puppet Theatre.
