Boyana Church
The Boyana Church is now one of the most worshipped monuments in Bulgaria included in the UNESCO list of the world’s natural and cultural heritage. It is a monument representing Bulgarian architecture and church painting of the Middle Ages.
During the Middle Ages the strong Bulgarian fortress of Boyana (Batil) stood on the lower slopes of Vitosha Mountain in what is now known as the Sofia suburb of Boyana. The name is mentioned for the first time in 969. The Boyana Church was build within the fortress of the city of Sredets (Sofia) and is a magnificent example of medieval architecture and monumental art.

The Boyana Church is about 900 years old. During its existence, the Church has undergone many extentions, and thus its present complex volume differs considerably from the original one. New buildings have been added to the First (East) Church, architectural transformations have been made, the decoration has been changed.
The Boyana church consists of three parts, the oldest of which was build in the 11th century. The Bulgarian church preserves frescoes dating from the time of its construction. These frescoes have extremely high quality and cost and are one of the most valuable masterpieces of the European and Bulgarian medieval painting art.
